Treasury Secretary Warns of ‘Permanent Economic Damage’ If US Doesn’t Reopen

‘Enough Is Enough’ Two Pennsylvania Counties Defy Governor and Reopen

The elected officials of two counties in central Pennsylvania have decided to reopen before Gov. Tom Wolf lifts the CCP virus lockdown restrictions in their counties. The Dauphin county board of commissioners declared their intention in a letter to the people of the state on May 8, while the elected officials of Lebanon did it in a letter to the governor on the same day. “Enough is enough. It is time to reopen the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and return our state to the people (as prescribed by our Constitution) and not run it as a dictatorship,” Jeff Haste, the Chairman of the Dauphin County Board of Commissioners wrote in the letter. Haste said that since Gov. Wolf imposed the lockdown to control the pandemic it has caused more than 1,793,200…

Treasury Secretary Warns of ‘Permanent Economic Damage’ If US Doesn’t Reopen

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Sunday said that reopening the economy must be done in a strategic way, but he stressed that “permanent economic damage” might be done if lockdown measures are not lifted.

“I think there’s a considerable risk of not reopening. You’re talking about what would be permanent economic damage to the American public,” he said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“We’re going to reopen in a very thoughtful way that gets people back to work safely, that has them social distance,” Mnuchin said, adding that “people will be able to go into stores” and “some of them will have reservations.”

Over the past several weeks, amid mounting job losses and a relatively high unemployment rate, there has been a push to reopen some businesses that were shuttered to curb the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus pandemic.

On May 8, the Labor Department issued a jobs report that found that nearly 15 percent of people are unemployed, while at least 20 million have filed for unemployment insurance over the past eight weeks or so.

“These are not large numbers because the economy isn’t doing well. These are large numbers because we’ve shut down the economy,” Mnuchin said Sunday.

Mnuchin said there could be a 25 percent unemployment rate, and it would be because “we closed down the economy” to mitigate the spread of the CCP virus, a novel coronavirus that emerged in China last year. It’s “unlike the Great Depression, where we had economic issues,” he said, referring to the huge economic downturn of the 1930s and 1940s.

Mnuchin added on the program that “the reported numbers are probably going to get worse before they get better” but predicated stronger third and fourth quarters

“Next year is going to be a great year,” he said, adding, “I see the glass as half full and not half empty. … Yes, there are issues, but we’re working through those issues. The task force is working through those issues when we see them. The task force is figuring out how to fix them.”

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, is not in a rush to sign another trillion-dollar relief bill, despite calls to do so by top Democrats in Congress, Mnuchin and other White House officials have said. House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and others have signaled they want to vote on another stimulus package that would send money to state and local governments next week.

FDA Approves First COVID-19 Antigen Test for Emergency Use

Federal authorities announced Saturday that emergency-use authorization has been granted for the first antigen test for COVID-19, the disease caused by the CCP virus. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in a May 9 release, said the authorization was issued late Friday to Quidel Corporation for an antigen test, a new type of diagnostic test designed for rapid detection of the virus that causes COVID-19. Antigen tests detect the presence of the disease, while antibody tests indicate past infection. FDA chief scientist Denise Hinton said in a letter (pdf) that Quidel’s test, called the Sofia 2 SARS Antigen FIA, that based on the scientific evidence, “it is reasonable to believe that your product may be effective in diagnosing COVID-19, and that the known and potential benefits of your product when…
