NFL Free Agent Arrested After 157 Pounds of Marijuana Found in Car: US Attorney

NFL free agent Greg Robinson and former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Jaquan Bray were arrested after officials found 157 pounds of marijuana at a border checkpoint area in Texas.

In a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the two former players were charged with conspiring to distribute marijuana.

Officials said the two approached the Sierra Blanca Checkpoint Station in Texas, where a U.S. Border Patrol canine unit made a detection inside their vehicle, said the office. Agents asked Bray to park the vehicle at another inspection area.

“A subsequent inspection of the vehicle by agents revealed the presence of approximately 157 pounds of marijuana inside several large duffle bags in the rear cargo area,” according to the U.S Attorney’s Office.

Robinson is accused of renting the vehicle in the Los Angeles area on Sunday and arranged for an Uber driver to drive him and Bray to Louisiana. As they approached El Paso, Texas, Robinson told Bray to start driving.

“When they approached secondary inspection at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint, Robinson asked the third individual to claim the marijuana and that Robinson said he would pay the third individual to do so,” officials said in the news release.

The Uber driver, who was not identified, refused to take responsibility and told the former players that he wouldn’t have driven the pair if they knew there were drugs in the vehicle, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Robinson and Bray both face as many as 20 years in prison.

“We are aware of the report but will decline further comment,” an NFL spokesperson told NFL.com.

According to CBS Sports, Robinson, who was the former No. 2 overall pick, is slated to become an NFL free agent this offseason after he spent two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns reportedly had no plans to re-sign him.

Bray, meanwhile, played for several teams before he joined the now-defunct Alliance of American Football as well as the Canadian Football League.

“Robinson battled inconsistency while starting 14 games last season for the Browns, who had a disappointing 6-10 season. He was benched for one game and missed another with a concussion. Bray, a former NFL wide receiver, spent three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He was last on a roster in Sept. 2018, when he was released by the Houston Texans,” according to a writeup from NFL.com.
