Washington and Taipei Bolsters Ties With High-Level Economic Talks
TAIPEI, Taiwan—U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Nov. 21 welcomed deepening ties between Washington and Taipei following a high-level economic dialogue between the two sides. The inaugural talks, under the auspices of a new Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue (EPP), were held virtually and in-person in Washington on Friday. It focused on areas including science and technology, supply chain restructuring, and 5G networks. “The United States and Taiwan are strong partners in defending freedom, advancing economic ties, and promoting our shared democratic values. The American Institute in Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue strengthens our economic relationship even further,” Pompeo wrote on Twitter on Nov. 21. Democrat representatives Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Talib, and Ayana Pressly became known as the “Squad” for their shared progressive agenda.
The four congresswomen supported the “Defund the Police” movement, “Medicare for All,” free college education, the “Green New Deal,” and other socialist policies.
But now, there’s a new clique that’s entering the fray.
According to the New York Post, Republican congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis said “We need to form our own ‘squad.’ We have a group of new Republicans who love America. We value freedom, liberty, and opportunity.”
Malliotakis, whose mother’s family fled Cuba, will be the only Republican in the New York City congressional delegation in the coming January.
She’s backed by three newly-elected Republican Congress members, including Carlos Gimenez, Maria Elvira Salazar, and Victoria Spartz.
Spartz grew up in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and lived there for 42 years. She said she’s very sad to see what is happening in the United States.
Election results so far show the Republicans gaining an extra eight seats in the House—seven from the Democratic party and one from others.
The Democratic party is projected to keep its majority in the House with a narrow margin.
