Trade Deal or De-couple? Does Trump Have a Dangerous Hope? – Zooming In | The China Angle

Welcome to Zooming In’s China Angle, I am Simone Gao. Recently the Trump administration has expressed satisfaction with how China has been purchasing US agricultural products. However, the president called off the scheduled review talk by the two parties on the trade deal last week saying I don’t want to talk to China right now. Does the president still want a trade deal with China? Is the trade deal a good remedy for the unbalanced trade relations with China or is it going to facilitate a further integration with China that will eventually harm the American people? Let’s start today’s inquiry by hearing these words from President Trump’s national economic advisor Larry Kudlow. In another fox news interview, Kudlow said China has been buying more agricultural products than we have…

Former Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele Joins Anti-Trump Lincoln Project

The Lincoln Project brought former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele on board this week, just a few days after losing George Conway.

Steele, an MSNBC political analyst, will be a senior adviser to the political action committee, which is vociferously opposed to Republican President Donald Trump.

Steele said he has witnessed Trump “devolve into preying upon our fears and resentments with a narcissism that nurtures only chaos and confusion.”

“Leadership is needed now more than ever and I am proudly committed to resetting the course of our nation, standing once again for the future of my Party; and working with The Lincoln Project to help restore the purpose for sitting in that chair,”聽he added in a statement.

Rick Wilson, who co-founded the group, called Steele a “singularly insightful and effective political leader.”

“Diverse voices are central to The Lincoln Project movement. There is no future for Conservatism if we do not elevate them. Michael Steele has been doing that his entire life and we鈥檙e excited to have him doing it with The Lincoln Project,” said Mike Madrid, another co-founder.

Conway, a third-co-founder, announced this week he was leaving the group to spend more time with his family. Conway’s wife, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, is also leaving her job.

Steele, 61, was the lieutenant governor of Maryland for four years until 2007 before becoming the Republican National Committee chair from 2009 to 2011. Steele lost an effort to stay in the position to Reince Priebus.

The Lincoln Project is billed as a group of Republicans who are united “with a singular mission: To defeat Donald Trump and Trumpism.”

Trump has called the group “a disgrace to Honest Abe” and full of “LOSERS.”

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), responding to the group launching digital ads against his reelection efforts, referred to it last month as a “cabal of political consultants is all in it for the money.”

“If they actually cared about the country, they wouldn’t be working to advance the socialist, anarchist agenda of the radical left,” he added.

Victorian Premier Wants To Extend State of Emergency

The Victorian government wants to extend its state of emergency by at least 12 months to combat the ongoing coronavirus crisis. However, Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien said the state coalition would vehemently oppose a long-term extension that would allow the government to unilaterally keep Victoria locked down. While the state had 15 more deaths on Aug. 24, the number of new cases plummeted to 116—the lowest it has been since 74 on July 5. That was also the last time the number was under 100. Premier Daniel Andrews said the state of emergency would be reviewed every four weeks, but parliament must approve the change. As the legislation stands, the state of emergency can only run for six months. That runs out on September 13, when Melbourne’s stage-four lockdown is…
