Italy Confirms Third Coronavirus Death as Cases Spike

Italy confirmed the third coronavirus death on Sunday, identifying the case as an elderly cancer patient. The elderly woman was stricken in Crema, located in Lombardy, where most cases have been reported in the country, said Italian officials. “She had been hospitalized for a few days,” Giulio Gallera, Lombardy’s top health official, said in a news conference. “She’d been tested and they already knew she had the coronavirus.” As reported by the AFP news agency, Angelo Borrelli, the head of Italy’s civil protection agency, said that 152 people in Italy are confirmed to have contracted the virus, which causes the disease COVID-19 and has triggered lockdowns in China and South Korea. On Feb. 21, Italy announced its first coronavirus death, saying a 78-year-old man died in Veneto. On Feb. 22, a…

Over 830 People Test Positive for Coronavirus in South Korea, Including US Force Individual

South Korea on Monday reported 231 new cases of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), including a U.S. Force Korea (USFK) dependent.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) announced 70 new cases and one additional death late Monday afternoon. Earlier in the morning, the country reported its seventh death and a rise of 161 new cases from the previous day.

Now, South Korea has at least 833 known cases of coronavirus with eight fatalities.

U.S. Force Korea announced on Monday that it had been informed by the KCDC that a 61-year-old woman, a USFK dependent living in Daegu, had tested positive for the virus.

It marks the first time that a USFK individual has been infected with virus since South Korea reported its first confirmed case on Jan. 20.

The infected woman visited Camp Walker’s Post Exchange on Feb. 12 and 15.

“KCDC and USFK health professionals are actively conducting contact tracing to determine whether any others may have been exposed,” the announcement stated.

USFK also raised the risk level to “high” for U.S. personnel in South Korea as a preventative measure.

It is unclear what the woman’s nationality is and whether her case has been included in the total 833 confirmed cases reported by KCDC.

Camp Walker is a U.S. military base in Daegu, which is about 186 miles southeast of the capital Seoul.

South Korea’s defense ministry announced that 13 of its service members have now been infected with the virus as of 4 p.m. local time on Monday, according to local outlet Yonhap News Agency.

Of the 13 cases, 10 are in the Army, and one each in the Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy.

About 7,500 Korean soldiers have been isolated at their bases. Among them, 350 people either have symptoms of the virus or had direct contact with infected patients, said South Korea’s deputy defense ministry spokesperson Moon Hong-sik.

KCDC also reported two deaths on Monday. According to Yonhap, the eighth death involves a 67-year-old man who tested positive for the virus on Thursday at Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo, a county in North Gyeongsang province.

The man had been transferred to Kyungpook National University Hospital in Daegu, where he died. At the time of writing, it is not known if he passed away on Sunday or Monday.

The country’s seventh death involves a 62-year-old man who died on Sunday at Daenam Hospital.

Of the eight deaths, six have been connected to Daenam Hospital. According to Yonhap, over 110 people, including nine medical staff at the hospital are infected with the virus.

Of the 231 new cases, 205 are in Daegu and the broader North Gyeongsang province, and four are in Seoul.

Among the new cases reported on Monday, at least 129 are linked to a super-spreader who attended services at Shincheonji Church. The 61-year-old female and the country’s 31st confirmed case tested positive for the virus on Feb. 18—the first in Daegu and North Gyeongsang province.

South Korean Prime Minister Chung Il-kwon said on Monday that he will visit Daegu on Feb. 25 to “spearhead” local quarantine measures in person, according to Yonhap.

“Preemptive measures are necessary to prepare for the possibility of [the coronavirus] spreading across the nation,” Chung said.

Federal Judge Blocks Coronavirus Quarantine in Costa Mesa, California

A court temporarily blocked the U.S. government from transferring as many as 50 people infected with the coronavirus to Costa Mesa, located in Southern California, for quarantine after local officials pushed back. The officials argued that federal officials provided no details about how neighborhoods in the Orange County city would be protected from the virus, which causes the disease COVID-19 and has triggered lockdowns in dozens of Chinese cities since it emerged late last year. Costa Mesa filed a legal request on Friday afternoon to halt the plan to hold 30 to 50 patients who tested positive at the Fairview Developmental Center, which is located near several neighborhoods, unless the facility is deemed suitable for quarantine, according to the Los Angeles Times. “It is certainly not an isolated location,” Costa Mesa…
